MicroVision, Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS) has announced an exclusive strategic alliance with Blue-Band LLC to combine lidar sensing with intelligent transportation software for the intelligent transportation system market. The companies intend to develop smart infrastructure solutions for transportation agencies and infrastructure operators.

#Commercial focus of the alliance

MicroVision said the arrangement forms part of its commercial growth strategy. The company intends to use Blue-Band’s transportation software and real-time traffic integration capabilities alongside its own short- and long-range lidar portfolio.

MicroVision said the combined offering is intended to expand its intelligent transportation capabilities and support revenue-generating opportunities through scalable, cost-effective solutions. Chief Commercial Officer James Byun said the alliance is also intended to contribute positively to the company’s bottom line.

#Planned transportation applications

The proposed solutions are intended to address several infrastructure use cases. These include monitoring vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists at intersections, as well as tracking turning movements and changing traffic conditions to support traffic signal operations and traffic management.

Another application involves detecting roadway obstructions, unexpected vehicle movements and potentially hazardous conditions. The companies said this could provide transportation operators with information to support situational awareness and response activities.

The alliance also covers infrastructure modernisation. MicroVision and Blue-Band intend to provide sensing systems that can work alongside existing infrastructure and support interoperability across transportation networks.

#How the technology platforms fit together

MicroVision’s approach uses multiple sensing technologies and perception capabilities rather than a single sensor design. The company said its portfolio can be configured for different requirements involving range, field of view, performance, power consumption and cost.

Blue-Band’s platform is designed to connect field sensing equipment with intersection analytics and traffic management systems. The companies intend for that combination to turn real-time environmental data into operational information for transportation networks.

#Company backgrounds

MicroVision develops lidar-based perception solutions for industrial, security and defense, infrastructure, and automotive applications. Its portfolio includes short- and long-range lidar, solid-state sensors with varying wavelengths, sensor architectures, design-to-cost engineering and open software solutions.

Blue-Band develops intelligent infrastructure technologies that connect field systems and convert sensor data into operational intelligence. Its IntegraOS platform supports technology integration, visualisation, analytics, artificial intelligence, equipment monitoring and automated response across transportation and other infrastructure applications.
