Meta Critical Minerals Inc. (CSE:MTTA)(OTCQB:MTTAF)(FSE:VJ3) has appointed John Melkon, a senior advisor to the United States Military Academy, to its Strategic Advisory Board effective immediately. The company said the appointment supports its work on the Arcadia and Lake Owen critical-mineral assets in Wyoming.

#Melkon’s military and academic background

Melkon was a Director and Assistant Professor at the United States Military Academy from 2012 to 2026. He has also recently been tasked with building and leading the Critical Minerals Consortium, including coordinating its planning and carrying out its strategic mission for faculty, cadets and the wider community of practice.

Earlier in his career, Melkon served as a senior operations advisor to U.S. Army Africa from 2009 to 2012 and as a strategic operations officer for the Department of Defense from 2006 to 2009. He also spent more than 13 years as an Army Special Forces officer and has operational experience across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

His stated areas of expertise include civil-military operations, unconventional warfare, counterterrorism, counterinsurgency and foreign internal defense. Melkon is currently a PhD candidate at Stellenbosch University and an Extraordinary Professor of Practice in Geopolitics at North-West University in South Africa.

#Role in Meta’s Wyoming projects

Meta CEO Rana Vig said Melkon’s experience negotiating critical supply chains for U.S. national security could assist the company’s engagement with government, military and industry stakeholders. The company identified zircon, titanium, rare earth elements, scandium and vanadium as minerals for which it is seeking secure domestic sources, describing domestic sourcing as a stated national security priority.

Vig also said Melkon’s expertise would support the advancement of Arcadia and Lake Owen towards resource definition and feasibility. The company said the projects could contribute to U.S. domestic sources of critical minerals used in aerospace and defense, nuclear energy and advanced manufacturing. These statements are forward-looking and remain subject to risks including exploration and development challenges, permitting and regulatory requirements, funding availability, commodity market conditions and changes in government priorities. Meta said there can be no assurance that anticipated objectives or collaborations will be achieved.

#Arcadia drilling programme

On October 5, Meta said it had received approval to proceed with a 10,500-foot (3,200-metre) drill program at the Dugout Creek deposit within its advanced-stage Arcadia Project in Washakie County, Wyoming.

Dugout Creek is one of two near-surface, open-pittable heavy mineral sand deposits identified at Arcadia. The deposit contains zircon, titanium-bearing ilmenite and rare-earth-element-bearing monazite.

#Discussions at West Point

Before the drilling approval, Meta management attended a research day at the United States Military Academy at West Point. The company said preliminary discussions with faculty and researchers covered potential collaboration involving its Wyoming projects and possible alignment with U.S. military and government priorities for critical minerals.

The company has not stated that any collaboration has been completed. The discussions remain described as preliminary and potential.

#U.S. import reliance figures

Meta cited the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2026 Mineral Commodity Summaries, which reported that the United States was 100% net import reliant on scandium and titanium sponge metal and 67% net import reliant on rare earths, compounds and metals in 2025.
